I can't say enough about this school. Reading about it here or checking out the website can never do justice to the incredibly quality within the classroom (graduates go on to great high schools - most being their 1st choice). If your interest is piqued, I highly, highly recommend that you spend a small amount of time to set up a visit and see the school in action.
Our son went to Inly for middle school and absolutely loved it. Unlike our local public school, which has 6th grade in the middle school, Inly groups grades 4, 5 and 6 in Upper Elementary and then grades 7 and 8 in the middle school, which is its own freestanding clapboard house on the campus. The kids eat lunch in the kitchen area with their teachers and then have recess, which is fabulous! The academic curriculum is challenging and well suited to students who are self-motivated and curious. Experiential learning projects and trips are amazing, and opportunities like internships and Model UN and ocean rowing make it a transformative experience overall for young adolescents. They leave the program ready for high school and with a level of confidence and self-awareness that's really quite remarkable.
Inly is also a community - a partnership between faculty, staff, parents, and students. Parents get very involved in various aspects of Inly - not as helicopter parents, but as part of the Board, event planning, room parents, reading to younger children's classes, and participation in a very professionally run school-wide show that draws over 1000 attendees over 4 performances. (And to think that 3rd graders are entirely comfortable in such a venue - probably even more so than the parents of faculty who participate - alongside their teachers, their Head of School, much older students, and a handful of professionals!) Older students even take part in parent-teacher conferences, being major players in taking responsibility for their own education.
Inly continues to be a school and a community where my children flourish and are supported. The learning goes beyond academia and into the world and their place in it. Communication is actively encouraged between families, teachers, and faculty, and the education of my children feels like a true partnership between our family and the school.
Inly is NOT just a school - it is a progressive Montessori-based community where children learn the most important lessons first - who they are, how to respect others, and that they themselves are respected (yes, even at 3yo!). With multi-age classrooms, students learn how to ask for help and how to help others. By 8th grade, not only do graduates confidently give speaches to the entire community of students, faculty, staff, and parents, but they have also gained real-world experiences through internships, rowing, running a schooner from Mystic to Boston, volunteering, some going to Model U.N. in NYC, hosting Swedish exchange students, and some going to Sweden themselves! (Of course, all students also learn a full curicula that their peers in other schools are learning... but they'll learn at their own pace, which includes a faster pace for those who might be held back by a large class elsewhere, and a slower pace for those who need extra attention. Student:teacher ratios do not exceed 12 and are actually much smaller at the Toddler level as well as the Middle School level.)
The Inly School curriculum and "vibe" really suited our son. He flourished in ways that we could not imagine and it set him up for future success at high school and beyond.
The kids love it, and we love it.
Have 4 children there, from 3yo to 13yo. One will graduate next year and I'll have my 2yo start soon.
